Neslorchestra @ Allways Lounge
Along with about 18 of the city’s musical stalwarts, I’ll be part of Rick Trolsen’s NESLORCHESTRA. It’s a beast of a band led by a beast of a trombonist and composer, Rick Trolsen. Hard to believe it’s been nearly 25 years since I became an honorary Neslortian playing a few gigs with the original Neslort on Frenchmen Street before it became, well, …what it is today.
Neslort was among a handful of creative projects that put Frenchmen Street on the map including Galactic, Mas Mamones, Klezmer All-Stars and Royal Fingerbowl. It’s wonderful, despite our city’s devolving “cultural economy,” that creative artists like Rick are still on the scene.
Saturday, 6 October, 2018 (8:00pm & 10pm) “Evanescence at Snug Harbor”
Don’t miss this chance to welcome young lion Evan Arntzen to New Orleans. Our Soprano Summit-styled, dueling clarinet show will not disappoint.
This young man is one of NYC’s best reedmen specializing in early jazz. He works regularly with Vince Giordano’s Grammy-winning Nighthawks and just about anyone else you can think of that needs old-school clarinet and saxophone. This will be his first pilgrimage to New Orleans!

Sunday, 30 September 2018 (All Night)
I will be back in New York to participate in the 2018 NY Hot Jazz Festival. The annual program will be hosted by the McKittrick Hotel (not really a hotel) to celebrate early jazz in various ways. Some sublimely musical, some ridiculously campy, but something for everyone.
Around 4:15pm, I’ll be a featured guest in an ensemble directed by New Orleans-based trombonist, Charlie Halloran.
At 6:30pm, I have prepared a Soprano Summit-styled program with reedman Evan Arntzen.
Then, at the end of the affair, hang out with me for the late-night jam session.

25th Annual Jazz In the Pines Festival
Under the musical direction of my mentor bassist, Marshall Hawkins, Jazz in the Pines celebrates its 25th year. Recent fires that threatened the area missed the mountain community directly, but the boon of the festival will be welcome more than usual. I am honored to lead a special tribute to New Orleans on Saturday afternoon and to participate in a special “Seahawk Modern Jazz Orchestra” concert that evening.
